Horse Drawn on the Wall - Art Idea Inspired by Edie Sedgwick’s 1965 Vogue Photo Layout

I remember seeing this photo years ago in my university Lithography class. Someone had brought in a book on Edie Sedgwick and this photo was included. The original source for the photo was from Vogue Magazine in a 1965 article about "Youthquakers". The moment I saw this image made me want my own home so that I could draw on the wall too! Later I discovered that the drawing was actually on paper tacked to the wall, but in the black and white photo it looked as if it was drawn directly on the wall - which I think is a more interesting idea.

While I still don’t quite have the right wall to create a drawing so splendid, I have painted a mural inspired by Matisse's "The Goldfish” painting on the wall of one of my bathrooms. Inspiration for Art for your home can come from many places.

PS, love the leather rhino that Edie is doing an arabesque on!

Style Idea: Abstract Painting in a Classic Design Living Room

Style Idea: Abstract Painting in a Classic Design Living Room

This living room has a beautiful, classic design which is enhanced by the wonderful abstract painting above the sofa.   The subtle color on the wall sets off the furnishings and painting beautifully, and adds welcoming warmth to the room.   The painting reminds me a bit of Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park paintings which I love.   While symmetry can sometimes be static, the blue color in the painting, and as accents in the lamps, pillows, chairs and small objects on the coffee table helps to move the eyes around this gorgeous room.   Love how the rectangular forms in the painting and furniture are repeated.

If you follow the Ocean Park paintings link, it will take you to the Corcoran Gallery (in Washington DC) website and information about an exhibit in 2012, of Diebenkorn’s paintings.   On their website they have a wonderful video showing the paintings.

Why have Art in your Home?

I believe displaying Art in your home is the ultimate in expressing your individual style. At first you hang mass produced art like posters on your walls, and slowly as you learn, you start to develop and hone your unique sensibility towards Art.

I love seeing Art in homes and this blog is about sharing inspiring ideas for displaying and collecting Art for the home. I will be featuring Artist interviews, gallery owner interviews, homeowners who have Art in their homes, tips on hanging Art, framing Art, buying Art, Art Festivals, collecting Art, decorating with Art and whatever else inspires me to share with you!
